Baker Mayfield was a transfer from Texas Tech where he was the Big-12 Offensive Freshman of the year starting 7 out of 8 games. In 2014 where he was at Oklahoma, he was one of the Scout Team Offensive Players of the Year. Had to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules. In 2015 Mayfield was awarded the Burlsworth Trophy (nation’s top player who began career as walk-on). In 2016 he was a finalist for the Heisman trophy, finishing third in the voting. He also repeated his win of the Burlsworth Trophy and was also named First Team All-Big 12. In 2017 Baker Mayfield was an unanimous first-team All-American and was the winner of the Heisman Trophy. Mayfield finished his career ranked second in FBS history in passing efficiency rating with 175.4, third in yards per attempt (9.7), tied for fourth in touchdown passes (131), fifth in total offense (15,690 yards) and seventh in passing yards (14,607).

Competitive 3 year starter. Progresses through reads quickly and scans the field. Releases the ball quickly and gets the ball to open receivers before defenders can react to make a play. Anticipates routes and time the ball well. Has the arm strength to squeeze the ball in tight windows before defenders can react. Arm talent to make all the passes. Shows nice touch on deep throws. shows accuracy on all three levels.  Impressive ability to escape from pressure, eluding rushers with quick feet. Excellent ability to improvise when the play breaks down and to extend whilst awaiting on a free receiver. Very accurate whilst he is on the move and outside the pocket. Has the winning mentality for the NFL, rises to the occasion and the stage is never too big for him. Rallies his teammates.

Shorter than ideal for some. Ball can come out low and prone to being tipped. Mechanics need work on short throws, can throw before feet are set and throwing off his back foot. Mostly in shotgun with a spread offense giving open throws to make. Will need to improve on when to get rid of the ball than lose yards from being sacked. Needs to protect the ball better when on the move.

Bottom Line

Baker Mayfield finished his career with some impressive records. He’s a very accurate quarterback with an underrated arm. He has the winning mentality and leadership desired for a NFL quarterback. The team that drafts him may need to build around his strengths early in his career and could see early success.
