This weeks 5 good and bad breakdowns from the Redskins, Cowboys game. Since Washington lost we will start with the Burgundy/ bad.
1- Defending Mobile Quarterback’s- This season has seen the likes of Dak Prescott (twice), Matt Stafford, Andy Dalton, Arron Rogers run for open runs on 3rd and longs in critical moments and cost this team! I attribute this to Inside Linebacker and Saftey play. Neither has been a strong point this season outside of games against struggling offense’s and poor running teams. Personally upgrading one of the 2 Inside Backer and Saftey spots is key this off season. But Preston Smith looked absolutely lost and invisible in this game when we needed him to step up. Ryan Kerrigan took a few bad angles but he isn’t as athletic as Dak so it’s hard to contain him. That said they needed to make adjustments as the game went on because Adams mobility caused big runs and passes in critical moments that really meant the difference today between a win and loss.
2- Run blocking- There were no running lanes open all game. Not the same story in the Pass blocking but Fat Rob was fighting for every yard. The Cowboys were schemed to stop our run to weaken the effectiveness of our play action passes. That said our offensive line should have been able to handle their own against Dallas. But a short week could have been apart of the issues but you have to show up for the biggest division game to date.
3- Missing Field Goals- Dustin Hopkins has been huge until these last 4 weeks. Mostly due to wind or in this game the sun blinding out the uprights. But Hopkins said it best post game he’s paid to make these field goals and lately he simply hasn’t in big moments. This is a issue that simply cannot continue moving forward for this team because it’s now cost us 2 very important games. There’s no need to change the Kicker he’s been solid. But they have to get back to the fundamentals.
4- Interior defensive pressure- All season this has been a consistent piece missing from our defense. In my opinion this is due to a lack of higher draft picks going to this area. Also the money spent on the Defensive line seen the rewards along the lines of other Free Agent signings that have worked out at other positions. Somewhere along the line they have to find a way to get impact players on the front 7 of this defense like they have at Cornerback and Outside Linebacker.
5- Defense- Honestly in almost every facet they simply didn’t look like they had anything for Dallas. Most teams this season haven’t but the priority this off season has to be finding a top 3 player to give this group another top talent outside of Josh Norman and Ryan Kerrigan.
Finally the Gold/ good
1- Kirk Cousins- Good or bad I’ll always have him as number 1 base do on his play. But you simply can’t play much better during a loss. Also you factor in the lack of run game and being without your best weapon for half the game Kirk was lights out. He made the big throws, didn’t surrender a single sack. This guy is playing at a top 5 level if not better. His play this season factored in with last season has definitely proven this guy is here to stay for a long time to come. In his last 21 starts Kirk Cousins has a total of 43 TD’s – 10 INT’s with a passer rating of 108.3.
2- Jordan Reed- This guy after his guts and performance was enough to make him number 1! This guy went down with a separated shoulder early and came back and simply went off. This guy is Elite and simply is one of the toughest players on this team. We need him to be okay for the playoffs and a run into the playoffs but this performance was simply amazing.
3- Josh Norman- Dez Bryant can say what he wants but he simply had I think 2 catches for 23 yards against Josh. Josh has been everything this team could have hoped for when they signed him to that 5 year 75 million dollar contract.
4-Wide Reciever’s- this is the strength of this team and Kirk and this group all had a big effect on keeping themselves in this game. DeSean Jackson had a huge play during their comeback attempt. Jamison Crowder was his usual big moment self again. This unit is definitely the class of the league from top to bottom.
5- Pass Blocking- This Offensive line is so good at giving Kirk the time he needs to tear defense’s apart. They didn’t have the same impact in the run they had against the pass rush, but this team has been great at keeping Kirk on his feet. Part of that’s is Kirk but this line is a huge part of the success this unit has week in and week out
